EXPERIENCE DETAILS

Highlights

  • Three days and two nights of fly-fishing the San Juan and Animas Rivers in Southwest Colorado
  • One day on the San Juan River and another on the Animas, with an optional third day
  • Trophy trout are not out of the question, with opportunities for fishermen of all skills to learn and enjoy
  • Stay at the General Palmer Hotel, Durango’s premiere Victorian hotel located in the heart of downtown
  • An optional day trip to Mesa Verde to explore the 700-year-old archaeological site
Set in the high San Juan mountains of Southwestern Colorado, Durango is where the Old West meets the Southwest. The area’s mining and railroad history are still written all over town, but you’ll be more interested in the story written thousands of years ago by the volcanoes and glaciers that formed the deep valleys and rivers now stocked with fish.

Over three days and two nights, cast off in two of the area’s most famed freestone and tailwaters. The San Juan River is a unique fishery that can frustrate many anglers with its small flies and special temperament. Local fishing guides have developed in-depth knowledge of the water and provide an educational experience for every fisherman, whether it’s your first time on the river or your fiftieth.

The Animas River is a unique urban-accessed fishing beauty, but can be fraught with wily fish and difficult wading. While beginners and experienced anglers alike may find it tough, the Animas will teach you the finer points of fly-fishing with opportunities to hook into a large brown on any given day. A shot of a true trophy trout is not out of the question on this river fondly known as “The Animal.”

Stay at Durango’s premiere Victorian hotel, the General Palmer located right in the heart of downtown’s National Historic District. Enjoy watching the train come and go from the patio deck, with bright and open rooms complete with marble tiles and countertops, a coffee bar, plush study area and large windows.

And no trip to Durango would be complete without a trek overland to Mesa Verde National Park for a VIP tour of home of the Ancestral Pueblo people who lived there over 700 years ago. Head for home with plenty of fish tales that will seem too good to believe — only you will know the truth.

FAQ

Will I be sharing a hotel room?
For this trip, guests will have their own room with a king bed.  If you’d prefer to share a room with a king or two full beds, then please let us know and we can make that adjustment.  You and your room partner would also receive a discount towards your trip if you choose this option.

Do I need to bring my own fishing gear?
All fishing gear, including waders, will be provided by the outfitter. However, you are welcome to bring any of your own fishing supplies or gear that you would like.

Will the fishing be done via wading or drift boat?
Both! You will have a chance to wade on The Animas, while leaving the navigation to your guides so you can concentrate solely on fishing The San Juan from a drift boat. If you opt to fish on our arrival day as well, instead of the Mesa Verde VIP tour, we have designed that to be lake fly fishing or a high country creek. Please let your Manifest Customer Care Representative know in advance if you would like a 3rd fishing opportunity, so we may arrange in advance with the anglers.
