You’ll begin your trip in the vibrant capital of San José, where you’ll be met at the airport and driven to Hotel Grano de Oro, a boutique luxury hotel located in a renovated tropical Victorian mansion in the heart of the city. Here, you can settle in for the evening and enjoy the comfort of your accommodations and the hotel’s many amenities—gourmet restaurant and wine cellar, fitness center, specialty gift shop, and rooftop sundeck with hot tubs—or head out to see the sights. 

Heavily influenced by European culture, San José is filled with architecturally beautiful historic buildings, and is home to a thriving arts, food, and entertainment scene. Whether you choose to check out the theaters, markets, and museums in the area or simply stroll the neighborhood around the hotel, a night in San Jose is a great way to kick off your vacation.

From San José, you’ll travel to the lovely town of Tortuguero where you’ll explore Tortuguero National Park and spend two nights at the luxurious Manatus Lodge, surrounded by a lush wildlife sanctuary and water canals. Dine at the hotel’s Ara Macaw Restaurant, relax in your private bungalow, and enjoy guided tours of the park where you’ll look for wildlife and learn about the long list of protected plants and animals in the area, including green macaws, jaguars, and several species of sea turtle.

From Tortuguero, you’ll travel to Turrialba for exhilarating rafting trips and guided hikes in Costa Rica’s most impressive primary rain forests. There, you’ll also visit a Cabécar Indian rancho (thatched house) and meet with the son of a local shaman. You’ll learn more about the history and culture of the Cabécar Indians—Costa Rica’s largest indigenous group—and how their remote location has helped them maintain their customs and language.

Next you’ll journey 3.5 hours by raft to the Arenal Volcano area, viewing spectacular scenery and experiencing grade III to IV rapids on the way to your deluxe accommodations at the award-winning Arenal Nayara Hotel & Gardens. During your stay, you’ll have privately guided tours of Arenal Volcano National Park, boat rides on the lake, and a trip to Sky Adventures, a rainforest adventure park with ziplines, hanging bridges, and more.
