“Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.”

Said by one of the world’s greatest travelers, Anthony Bourdain, experience that feeling on a trip inspired by one of his final Parts Unknown episodes. As you float your way through the Santa Elena Canyon, you’ll see firsthand the “platonic ideal of the Texan,” just as Bourdain described it.

Over three days and two nights, see the best of Big Bend National Park, with your first night spent at the area’s luxury Lajitas Golf Resort. Start your weekend with nine holes on Black Jack’s Crossing, the course designed by PGA Hall of Famer Lanny Wadkins and voted one of the best and most beautiful courses in Texas, or take a zipline tour of the resort’s 27,000 acres with spectacular mountain vistas.

The next morning, launch downstream on the Rio Grande River into Santa Elena Canyon, where you’ll float for the next two days between 1,500-foot limestone walls that rise straight up from the water’s edge. With the United States on one side and Mexico on the other, this unique natural wonder provides a jaw-dropping, once-in-a-lifetime experience for any boater, novice or accomplished.

Arrive at your camp spot for the night and take the opportunity for a short hike to see the area’s flora and fauna, guided by local experts. After a campfire dinner, snuggle up in your sleeping bag for a night under the stars.

Finish your float on the third day before heading for home from Lajitas’ private air strip. As you leave, feel inspired by the same landscapes and experiences as the man who inspired so many to travel, explore and adventure.

FAQ

What will I need for camping?
Other than what’s on the packing list, the guides will have everything you need from sleeping bags to eating utensils.  If you decide to pack additional things you might desire, it is important to keep the suitcase to “carry-on” size due to raft space. You can leave a portion of your luggage at the Lajitas Resort bell desk for days two and three should you wish.

What will the meals be like on the rafting portion of the trip?
For breakfast you’ll be served up some eggs, bacon, and oatmeal.  Lunches will be picnic style and include items such as sandwiches, fruit, and granola bars.  Dinners will be family style and dishes may consist of chicken, beef, potatoes and vegetables.  If you have any dietary restrictions, please notify a Manifest Representative so we can make preparations ahead of time.

Is alcohol included on the rafting trip?
Alcohol is not provided by Angell Expeditions, but it is permitted within the National Park, so long as it is concealed with a koozie or in a cup that is not glass.  Please reach out to your Manifest Customer Care Representative if you would like us to bring something on your behalf.

What type of vessel will I be rafting in?
The group will float down the river in a 6 person inflatable raft along with an expert instructor.  Our outfitter is also equipped with inflatable kayaks and canoes, however, those are typically only used in the event of low river flows.
