After the private jet touches down and you check into the award winning Estancia La Jolla, one of just five Meritage Collection resorts, hit the beach and see if the surf’s up. After a picnic lunch on the sand, you’ll be met by a local surf guide — one will be provided at each surf spot — who will help get you set up for your weekend in the waves.
Dip your toes in first at Scripps Break in La Jolla Shores, a popular beach that is perfect for beginners (or more experienced riders who might have lost their sea legs) with protection from the prevailing southwest wind. Throughout the next five days, hit the best waves San Diego has to offer with trips to Tamarack Break in Carlsbad, Torrey Pines State Beach and, after a short hike down a cliff, Black’s Break, where some of the top waves in the state come rolling through past a submarine trench half a mile off shore.
In between breaks, feast on local fare including a tasting menu of the season’s freshest fish at George’s at the Cove and the elevated Mexican cuisine San Diego is known for at Javier’s. Get above and below the waves with a guided snorkeling tour and sunset catamaran cruise, and learn more about surfing out of the water with a trip to the California Surf Museum and a lesson about how boards are shaped at Bessel Surfboards. No one will blame you if you skip an afternoon of surfing to enjoy the Estancia’s award winning spa, a “full-scale wellness escape” tucked away within 10 acres of lush gardens.
Your mornings begin with a surf-yoga session, and night ends with a bonfire on the beach. If you weren’t a surfer before you arrived in San Diego, you will be by the time you leave.
