With one of the highest bridges in the world over one of Colorado’s deepest canyons, the Royal Gorge, also known as the Grand Canyon of the Arkansas, is home to breathtaking views and adrenaline packed adventures you won’t find anywhere else. Just outside Cañon City, experience the gorge from every angle — above, below and even on the canyon walls.
After arrival in Fremont County, shake any fear of heights from the start with a Segway tour across the Royal Gorge Bridge. Don’t look down, with nearly 1,000 feet to the river below, the Royal Gorge Bridge is the highest suspension bridge in North America, and was the highest in the world until 2003. Following your first glimpses of the canyon and a nearby lunch, take in the views of the entire gorge and Bighorn Sheep Canyon on a helicopter tour that afternoon.
Depending on your group size, check into one of several luxury accommodations in the area. A riverside yurt sleeps four, while the nearby Parkdale Ranch is a four-bedroom southwestern-style villa that can accommodate 10 with no worries about the neighbors next door (hint: it’s only the wildlife). No matter where you stay, you won’t be spending much time there anyway. Toss your bags on your bed and head out for dinner aboard the Royal Gorge Route Railroad, where you’ll be served 360-degree views of stunning natural wonders alongside a three-course organic and locally-sourced dinner.
On day two, you’ll experience all the highs and lows of the Royal Gorge with a zipline tour above the bridge, as well as a white water rafting trip down the Arkansas River at the foot of the 1,250 foot canyon. If that’s not enough, your final day will take you up the canyon walls with a guided hike on the Via Ferrata, where a trained mountain guide will lead you on a controlled mountaineering experience, providing views of the Royal Gorge that most don’t have the opportunity to see.
Get in one last hit of adrenaline with a ride on the Royal Rush Skycoaster, where you’ll swing more than 50 miles per hour above the canyon walls. After that, any amount of turbulence on the plane ride home will seem tame in comparison.
